Kenneth O. Hanson Award

June 2013

Judge Kathleen Halme chose Sally Van Doren’s poem, “Color Theory,” from Hubbub magazine Volume 28.

Color Theory

In May comes the blue window,
but in the meantime, this mean time,
he runs from himself, into glass.

We turned on the flashlight
last night and saw a legless curtain
scurry over a dilated eye.

When it opens again, these anecdotes
will bathe themselves in orange,
ignite and cease to project.

Red is what we really want.  Red
in the morning, yellow for lunch
and black at night.

The Loy Ledbetter Award
